 Notes for Elizabeth Morris     

      Elizabeth was acquitted of a felony charge at Bristol in 1788 and in 1790, at 12 years of age, she was convicted at Bristol of grand larceny.  Sentenced to transportation for 7 years, she arrived in Australia in 1791 on the ship 'Mary Ann' as part of the Third Fleet.     

      At aged 15, Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter, Hannah, fathered by John Dalton. John was a convict who arrived in 1791 on the ship Albermarle.  He had been sentenced to 7 years transportation at the Old Bailey for theft. In 1794, John abandoned Elizabeth & his daughter Hannah and sailed on the 'Salamander' which was bound for Norfolk Island & then on to India.

In 1796 Elizabeth married William Kentwell, a convict who arrived in Australia on the Admiral Barrington (Third Fleet). William was convicted in Middlesex in 1788. William perished in floods leaving Elizabeth with her six children.       

      After William's death she placed her daughter Charlotte in the Female Orphan Institution and began a relationship with Murtagh Shields, an Irish convict who had been helping her run the farm.  They were refused permission to marry as Murtagh had left a wife and children in Ireland.  In 1813 Elizabeth gave birth to Murtagh's son James.  When Murtagh left, the next year, Elizabeth started a relationship with Thomas Thompkins, a convict who arrived on Fortune.  Thomas and Elizabeth married in 1815   Around this time Elizabeth's son William Cody Kentwell, was killed by aboriginals at Wilberforce.                                                                

      Thomas died at the end of 1829 and Elizabeth died 1852 aged 75

 

Notes for John Dalton

      Tried at the Old Bailey on 24th October 1787 for theft, sentenced to 7years transportation, (he was 11years old). Left England on 27th March 1791. Ship:- the 'Albermarle' (3rd Fleet)
