Descendants of
Thomas Acres (Akers)
and
Ann Hinchley (Hinkley
1. Thomas
1 Acres (Akers), born 1756 in England Devon Exeter; died 1824 in Australia NSW Cowpastures, son of Thomas Acres and Mary Husson. He married (1) in 1791 in Australia NSW Parramatta Ann Hinchley (Hinkley), born 1758 in England Mdx London; died 1830 in Australia NSW Campbelltown, daughter of Henry Hinchley) and Ann Barry.Notes for Thomas Acres
Tried at Exeter, Devon in March, 1785 for assault and highway robbery with a value of 10 shillings. He was originally sentenced to death which was commuted to transportation for 7 years. Thomas departed England in 1787, aged 29 on the Charlotte.
Thomas was emancipated in 1792. In 1794 he was granted twenty acres of land on the Hawkesbury River. Here, in 1798, he was attacked and speared by aborigines when they mistakenly thought he was an enemy. In 1800, his property was destroyed by floods. He purchased land in 1802 which he sowed with maize and wheat. He sold this land bought land at Cattai in partnership with Thomas Phillips. Thomas moved on and purchased land at Cowpastures and Airds. He died in Cowpastures in 1824 and is buried at St Peters, Campbelltown.
Ann arrived as a convict on the Mary Ann (2nd Fleet) July 1791. She was convicted of theft of clothing.

Notes for Ann Hinkley(Hinchley
Convict arrived per Mary ann (2nd Fleet) 9 Jul 1791. Sentenced in Middlesex to transportation for 7 years.
Cornish shoemaker, convicted of highway robbery; Exeter Castle
1785, death)
7 years; Dunkirk hulk, Plymouth; Charlotte 1788.
Green-fingered perhaps and probably Government house gardener before
taking
up one of the original Hawkesbury farms on 1794. With him was Ann
Guy, nee
Hinchley, already married when transported for theft of clothing
finally
retrieved from a Shoreditch pawnshop OB 1790, 7 years; Mary Ann
1791.
Family legend tells of her release from the ship into Aker's care
and of her
reputation as a midwife. But maybe in her own confinements she
called in
Hawkesbury neighbour surgeon Molloy, who probably also dressed
Thomas'
wounds the day the Aboriginals attacked the Aker's farm, mistaking
it for
that of their enemy Forrester.
Rising water was another hazard, and Thomas was clearly dissatisfied
with
his original farm. By 1802 he had bought an additional 20 acres. He
tried
unsuccessfully to buy a farm in partnership with Mover in 1803, but
finally
sold out in 1805 for £100 and moved to a smaller farm at Cattai.
Around 1811 the family moved to Campbelltown where in 1816 son
Thomas helped
guide the military in their campaign against the Aboriginals; mother
Ann
continued to guide local babies into the world. The family divided
as
families will, some going to Illawarra as whalers or whaler's wives
in the
1840's, others over the ranges to Cooma and one became a Parramatta
coachman."
