MARY TINDALL sworn.
My house is in Bolton-street, Piccadilly. The prisoner Mary Hipwell was left in care of the house, with a strict charge never to leave the house; I left town the 2d of August; on the 9th, I received a letter that my house was robbed; the fastenings are so good, that I am sure no person could get into my house without being let in; I have no suspicion of the servant being concerned in the robbery, any farther than quitting her charge, and basely going to Sadler's Wells: the plate she had never seen, was not taken; the winter clothes that she had not seen, were not taken; there are not half the things in the indictment, which I lost; I am able to swear to these gloves; when the patrol gave them to me, she said, they are not yours, madam, they are a pair you gave me; no, says I, Mary, these are mine most certainly; they never were worn; they are marked with the maker's name, and the initials of mine; I know them to be mine; I left them in the cabinet, locked up in a drawer; there was a pillow-case found in her box; there is no mark on it; but to the best of my belief it is mine; I saw the gloves the day before I went out of town.
- GRANT sworn.
I am the patrol belonging to Bow-street: I went to Mrs. Tyndall's house about a quarter before one; I took charge of the two prisoners; the woman prisoner told me nothing was lost but plate; the woman gave me the key of her box; and in searching her box, I found the pair of gloves and the pillow-case.

Notes for James Gosper

JAMES GOSPER.

Another of the esteemed and respected old Hawkesbury natives, in the person of Mr. James Gosper, of Alma-street, North Sydney, has passed to the Great Beyond, after a brief illness. Many Hawkesbury folk have kindly 'recollections of Mr. and Mrs. James Gosper, and will sympathise with Mrs. Gosper in her great loss after

The late Mr. Gosper, whose death occurred in a private hospital, at North Sydney on September 10, was a native of Upper Colo, and was born on November 18, 1840. His parents were Thomas and Mary Gosper, and ho was the last surviving member of a family of eleven. The subject of this notice spent his early years in Colo and was married on October 9, 1861, to Miss Ellen Christie, third daughter of Captain Thomas and Mary Christie of Lower Portland. The wedding was celebrated in the old building which served the dual purpose of school house and church at the Mouth of Colo, Lower Portland. The celebrant at the marriage was the Rev. Thorby Bolton, of the Church of England. Six years later the building came to grief in the big flood, not a vestige, of it being left, barring the foundation stones. Mr. Gosper followed farming pursuits at Colo and Lower Portland for several years, but after the big flood of 1867 he left the river and entered into business at North Sydney as a (baker and confectioner; In 1911 Mr. and Mrs. Gosper celebrated their golden wedding and again in 1921 there was a great gathering at their residence assembled to commemorate their diamond wedding anniversary. Despite his great age, the deceased veteran's mental faculties remained unimpaired right up to the last, and it was a pleasure to hear him relating his experiences on the river away back in the fifties arid sixties of last century. His parents were old colonists, both being Sydney natives. One of his brothers, William Gosper, who died twenty years back, was a well-known identity of Lower Portland. The late James Gosper is survived by his widow and a family of four sons and one daughter. Several children pre deceased their father by a great many years. Those living are: C. J., of Perth (W.A.), T. H. (Manly), Ephraim (North Sydney), Frederick (Lower Hawkesbury) and Miss Edith Gosper, who resided with her parents at North Sydney. Of grandchildren there are 19, and great-grandchildren 23. The interment took place in the C.E. section of the Northern Suburbs cemetery. The coffin was carried from the hearse to the grave side by four grandsons, viz., James,' Reginald, William, and Sidney Gosper. Before the last sad rites were performed, the deceased's favourite hymn 'Abide with Me,' was sung by those assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to the worthy, old Colo native. The service at. the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Frank Cash, of Christ Church, Lavender Bay, North Sydney, who spoke words of comfort to the bereaved widow and children.

MR. FRANCIS GOSPER.

Mr. Francis Gosper, a descendant of one of the earliest Australian pioneers, died recently at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Attenborough, of Canowindra, at the age of 88 years. His grandfather was one of the soldiers sent out in charge of convicts at the end of the 18th century, later transferring to the Sydney police. Of three sons, John (Mr. Francis Gosper's father), married Hannah Beal Reynolds, who was born at Wilberforce in 1809 and was a cousin of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the English portrait painter. They later moved to the Colo River and took up maize farm- ing. There were 12 children of the marriage, Francis being the second youngest of seven sons. Francis married his cousin, Esther, at Colo, and engaged in wheat farming at Neurea, near Wellington, until his retirement some time ago.

The late Mr. Gosper was a man of soldierly bearing, being more than six feet in height. He took a keen interest in horse racing and cricket, and was a crack shot. In his youth he was an all-round athlete, and he was an expert teacher, his services having been availed of by the police in the Hawkesbury district. Notes for David Gosper

OBITUARY.

MR. DAVID GOSPER.

It is with great regret that we have to record the death of another of Windsor's highly respected residents, in the person of Mr. David Gosper. The deceased was a son of Mr. Alderman J. T. Gosper, of "The Terrace," Windsor, and had lived in the Hawkesbury all his life. He was a man of quiet, unassuming nature a characteristic trait of the family-but in his own quiet way did much good, and won the respect of all with whom he came in contact. He was 48 years of age, and leaves a widow and four children-one son and three daughters-including Misses Annie Grace (a nurse), Eva and Edie, and Mr. Harry Gosper, a porter on the rail- way at Werris Creek.

Deceased had been a great sufferer for over twelve months, with that dire complaint consumption, and although everything possible was done for him by those near and dear and skilful doctors, he gradually sank and passed away on Sunday night. Recently he spent three months with his sister at Bathurst, but the benefits he derived by the change were but temporary, and the symptoms of his old complaint soon returned, and his friends realised there were no hopes for his recovery. Sincere sympathy is expressed in all sides for the bereaved widow and members of the family at the loss of their breadwinner.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, and was largely attended. The coffin was a polished cedar, with silver mountings, emblematic of the order of Oddfellowship. Deceased was a very old member of the Prince of Wales Lodge, the brethren of which followed the remains to their last resting place in St. Matthew's Church of England. The pall- bearers were Messrs F. J, Mortley, J. P., (Mayor), Joseph Ward, J.P., L. J. Barnett, G. Kirwan, and G. Pye. At the church the Rev. S. G. Fielding delivered an address, and paid a high tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased. A hymn was also sung, and the " Dead March " played as the corpse was conveyed from the church to the grave. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Thomas Primrose.

Wreaths were forwarded by the following :-Mrs. Berckleman and family, Mr. and Mrs. W. Holland and family, Mr. and Mrs. J. Upton and family, Mr. and Mrs. J. Ward and' family, Mr. T. Notes for Alfred Gosper

ALFRED GOSPER -

Much surprise was occasioned and great sorrow felt when the news of the death of Mr Alfred Gosper, 'of March Street, Richmond, became known. A sincere and genial friend and a man of upright character, he enjoyed the confidence, goodwill, and friendship of a very laree circle of friends in the Hawkesbury district. He was the son of the late J. T. Gosper, who lived on The Terrace, Windsor, and was for many years an alderman of the town and a much respected citizen. Mr. Jesse Gosper of Windsor, is a brother of the deceased. The late Alfred Gosper was 66 years of age. About six years ago he re tired from the railway service. He had been guard on the Richmond line for many years before he retired, in which position he was extremely popular with 'the travelling public. There never was a more conscientious public servant nor a more obliging guard. A few days prior to his death he met with an untoward accident. He fell from a cart and injured his spine, near his home. It was night time, and ay out all night and was in a bad way when found. He was immediately removed to the Prince Alfred Hospital for an operation, but passed away on Monday last. There are many who will mourn for good Alf. Gosper and deplore his untimely end. . He is survived by his wife and seven children, viz., Edith, Frank, Myrtle, Lewis, Alma. Inez and Rita. The remains were laid to rest in the C.E. cemetery, Richmond, on Tuesday. Rev. F. Dillon performed the last sad rites, and Mr. Chandler of Windsor was the undertaker.

[ A mythical link joining the past with the present was snapped by the death of Benjamin Gosper, and the last scion, direct descent of the older generation of a family that has been woven into the history of the Hawkesbury dies out. He bore a name honoured and revered not only m this district, but throughout the State, and added lustre to it. There was no more honoured man in the Hawkesbury district than the .: late Benjamin Gosper, and he leaves a family worthy in every to bear the good name. The late John Gosper, who was associated with the progress of Windsor for many years was a brother of the subject of this notice, and Mr. Jesse Gosper is a nephew. Benjamin Gosper was 72 years of age, and was the son of John Gosper. Almost the whole of his life was spent at Upper Colo, where he acquired valuable property. His health failing somewhat, he gave up work on the farm and settled down to a retired j life in Richmond, four or five years ago. He was bereaved ? of his brave old helpmeet some two years ago, and since then has resided alternately with his sons. He was living with his son William, in Richmond, when he was stricken with pneumonic influenza and was removed to the Richmond emergency hospital where he passed away on the 23rd June. A family of four survive him, viz., Benjamin (Pitt Town), Mrs. Henry Phipps (Upper Colo), William (Richmond), and James (Upper Colo). A daughter (Mrs E. McMahon), died some years ago, and a son, Hilton, was killed at the war about two years ago. The death of Benjamin Gosper removes one of the kindest hearted and most genuine men that the district contained. Always ready to do a neighbourly  turn, and possessing large
sympathies for a fellow creature in sorrow or distress, and a readiness to do his part in the amelioration of their lot, he will be missed and mourned by a very large circle of friends. The burial took place on the 24th ultimo, the remains being interred m St Matthew's Church of England cemetery, Windsor, where his wife and parents lie buried. Rev. Norman Jenkyn officiated at the service. -

Carden Wilson was a comic actor whose imitations of people gave joy to many Australians. Appearing at the Lyceum Theatre in 1900, the SMH critic commented, "Variation is lent to the entertainment by the performance of Mr Carden Wilson, who was loudly applauded for his excellent imitations of popular acts, amongst those specially recognised being Mr George Rignold (q. v.) and Mr Bland Holt; whilst an imitation of a broken down phonograph was capitally rendered." At the Opera House Melbourne in 1905, The Bulletin declared, "Carden Wilson's imitations of actors living and continue to be a bright feature of the show." He appeared in LADY BLARNEY at the Lyceum in 1896, capitally playing the small part of the servant Doolittle and the audience would have been glad to see more of the character. Other appearances were in DEARER THAN LIFE and THE WEAVERS at the Theatre Royal in 1890, SINBAD THE SAILOR at the Alhambra Theatre in 1898, THE CHRISTIAN at Her Majesty's in 1901, and a season of variety at the National Amphitheatre in 1908.

Garden's wife, actress Pearl Hellmrich, devotedly nursed her dying husband and kept her own turn going at the Tivoli and, declared The Bulletin, "if there are any benefits going to waste she deserves one of the fattest." Carden was the son of scenic artist, W.J. Wilson (q.v.). His eldest brother, William, was also a scenic artist, and another brother was comic actor, Frank Hawthorne. A cousin, theatrical agent William John Folkestone Wilson (q.v.) is also buried at Waverley Cemetery.
