He joined the Navy for a 5 year stretch on the 11th of October 1911 on his 20th birthday. He was made a Stoker 2nd Class on the Gayundah and was promoted Stoker 1st Class on the 11th of April 1912. When war broke out, Charles extended his naval service contract on the 1st of September 1914. He served as a Stoker on the Penguin and then on the Cerberus for a short time in September 1914. Throughout this year, Charles took part in operations conducted around German New Guinea in an effort to seize German assets and patrolling for enemy vessels. On the 20th of September 1914, Charles was transferred for service aboard the HMAS Australia. He remained on the Australia throughout the war until 19th of August 1919.
