He was found immediately after he had committed the act, by the groom at the hotel, but he only lived a few mintes. It was stated that Daunt arrived at the hotel from Tamworth about three days ago, but as he did not appear well, the licensee Mr. Maher was making arrangements to have him sent to Tamworth, for Medical Examination. Deceased, who was a stranger, had a brother and sister residing in Maitland, who were at once communication with, and who arrived at Dungowan on Tuesday morning. Mr. T.W. Higgins, J.P. went out to hold an enquiry. After hearing the evidence, he found that Lovell George De Courcy Daunt died on the 28th day, of September, 1914, at Dungowan, in the State of New South Wales, and that he went to his death through a wound in the throat self inflicted, whilst suffering depression.

OBITUARY

MR. ANDREW G. ELLEM.

There passed away on May 3, 1936, at his residence, Armidale road, South Grafton, Mr. Andrew G. Ellem, late of Glenreagh, aged 75 years, after a long and painful illness extending over a period of two years. The deceased was born at Wollimbi and came to live at Southampton, Clarence River, when quite a youth, and for a number of years followed farming pursuits in that district. Here he met and married Miss Perring. Some forty years ago he bought a property in the Glenreagh district, and became a very successful maize grower. By careful selection of seed he evolved a variety of maize which was then, and still is, known as "Ellem Corn," and which variety of maize he kept for 36 years. About fifteen years ago he retired from active farming, and up to the time of his illness lived a quiet life in the Glenreagh district. In his young days, deceased was a great lover of sport, especially cricket, in which he always took a keen interest and enjoyed the distinction of being a player well above the average. In his day he was recognised as the fastest bowler on the Clarence, a very sure catch in the slips and a sound batsman, having scores in every ten under the hundred. He failed by four to reach the coveted century, being run out at 96. In one season he took 112 wickets for 300 runs, and in one innings secured the whole 10 wickets. Amongst his cricketing friends he was known as "The Demon Bowler," so named on account of his speed, which was comparable with that of Spofforih. Although not a racy man, he was always an admirer of good horses, and bred some of more than ordinary merit. In the old bridle days he was always represented, and many a bridle was won by his horses. Continuing with his breeding he entered the registered sphere with a mare named Dementer. This mare had only a few starts, but won a double at Ulmarra. From Dementer he bred Lord Palm, and with this horse had wins at Grafton, South Grafton, and on one occasion he won the Ballina Cup. Phast Step was an other good horse of his breeding, winning races in Newcastle district and also at Grafton and South Grafton. The late Mr. Ellem was a great supporter of his church, and was a man of integrity, one whose word was his bond, and who was always to be relied upon, a man of strong character and fearlessness, one who had the courage of his convictions, but at the same time gentle and kind in disposition, loved by all who knew him and ever ready to do a good turn. Deceased is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters. Arthur and John (Grafton), Percy (Glenreagh) and Henry (Wombah, Chatsworth Island) are the sons, and Mrs. F. Green (Glenreagh) and Mrs. W. Blackley (Dorrigo) the daughters. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the South Grafton cemetery where a large number of relatives and friends came from all parts of the Clarence district to pay their last respects to one who was so dear to them.

OBITUARY
Harold Edward Ellem
About twelve months ago there arrived in Molong, very quietly and unostentatiously to take up the duties of Lino Operator at the Express office, a man who, as far as he was aware, did not have a friend in the town or district. Less than a year later, there were scores who were proud to call him friend and when, attacked by a serious illness, he needed help and sympathy, they vied with each other in performing all the acts of kindness which might brighten a sick bed or gratify a sick man's fancy. Though ill for some time before seeking medical advice, he strongly resisted suggestions that he take things easy for a time, preferring to stick to his exacting job, rather than let the paper or the staff down. However, there came a time when he could no longer carry on, and a heart attack rendered his entrance to the Molong hospital imperative. He later developed pneumonia, and his progress and relapses, alternately elated and depressed his numerous friends, and when at last it was thought that he was on the way to recovery there was universal satisfaction. Unfortunately typhoid fever symptoms were manifested, and his condition rapidly became worse, and, notwithstanding all that medical and nursing skill could do he passed away on Monday evening at the age of 42, sincerely mourned by a large proportion of Molong's inhabitants. His wife, and his sister (Mrs. Curran, of Ulmarra, Clarence River) with her husband were with him till the last and hardly left his bedside during his last days. A first-class tradesinan, he took a keen pride in his work and had won high praise from the management of many country newspapers, having been on the staff of journals at Grafton, (where he served his apprenticeship), Wellington, Coonabarrabran, Canberra and Molong. In his earlier days he played Rugby League and though a lightweight, had been presented with a gold medal in recognition of outstanding work as scrum-half in first class football. His widow (Canowindra) mother (Grafton) and brother, on active service (New Guinea) and two sisters, Ida (Mrs. W. Curran, Ulmarra) and Una, (Mrs. Gillam, Coff's Harbour) survive him. His remains were taken to Grafton for burial, McKeowen's Funeral Service arranging the long transport northwards.
